I recently paid a visit to the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop on Scruggs Road - located in the same shopping center as Old Oak Cafe. While I had been in several times before as a shopper, this time, Pende Ford, one of the volunteer store managers, sat down with me to share a little about the Discovery Shop's mission.
We went first to the Cancer Resource Corner - the heartbeat of the store. Loaded with books, hats, ribbons, informative brochures, and more (all, free) this is a resource hub for those whose lives have been touched by cancer. They connect people with support groups and tools they need to help navigate this harrowing journey.
The store functions as a retail space for both gently used items donated by the community and brand-new inventory donations from High Point Furniture Market. Thanks to their well-established relationship with suppliers, The Discovery Shop gets samples and floor models from many high-end brands that they then turn around and sell for prices well below wholesale.
Much of the new merchandise can be found in The Annex: their second retail space that is located around back on the lower level of the same shopping center. It feels like wandering through a designer's treasure trove filled with every style imaginable!
In the main shop you'll find all manner of home decor and furnishings, books, locally handmade greeting cards, jewelry, and more. Tuesdays are their typical reset day, so if you want to catch the latest finds, that's a good day to stop in!
I loved hearing about how the local business community comes together to support the shop's needs – a paint store donating paint to spruce things up, a jewelry store giving all the watches that come through fresh batteries, a home decor store offering gently used shelving they were changing out…it's a group effort, for sure! All donations can be dropped off at the store during regular business hours. They also offer pick-up which can be arranged by calling the number above and asking for Transportation.
