Did the song by The Mamas and The Papas just run through your head when you read that?!
My husband often has Mondays off, and while we're always excited to have a free day for exploring, sometimes we find ourselves looking at each other and wondering what to do because so many of our usual haunts are closed on the first day of the week. In reality, there are a plethora of options still available - so, (partially for my own benefit) I decided to compile a short list of ideas for the next time our collective brains draw a Monday blank. I hope it helps inspire you to get out and enjoy some post-weekend activities in the area as well. If you happen to have a favorite Monday stop that I didn't include, send it my way!
Pack a picnic blanket, grab a sandwich at Westlake Coffee and Cafe', Smith Mountain Lake Coffee House, or The Bagel & I (all open on Mondays) and take a drive up to The Peaks of Otter to enjoy your lunch by the small lake at the base of Sharp Top Mountain.
Both Gross and Johnson's Orchards in Bedford County are open on Mondays. So, if you fancy some apple picking while you enjoy the fresh autumn air, these are great options!
On the winery front, Peaks of Otter Winery and Fables & Feathers hold regular Monday hours. If you call ahead, Burnbrae Vinyards in Forest will also open by appointment on Mondays.
The great outdoors is always a good idea this time of year. We enjoy taking our dogs on the walking trails at Booker T. Washington National Monument, The Peaks of Otter, SML Community Park, and more!
If you're in the mood for some history, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford is open every day of the week from 10am-5pm.
Have you visited our local alpacas yet? Both Smith Mountain Lake Farm and Pacabella give tours on Mondays. But you do need to make reservations in advance.
For a nice dinner out, some establishments that remain open through the off season (including Mondays, right now) are Napoli by the Lake, Cancun, Napoli Cowboy, Magnum Point Marina, and Bruno's Clubhouse Bistro.
As you can see, there's no excuse to stay in and hibernate after the weekend festivities are over. Get out and support these wonderful area businesses that remain open just for you! As always, please call ahead, hours are subject to change.
